Using your online presence to expand your network and make new friends

Hey friends,

If you’ve been with us long enough, you probably know about some of the things we’ve been able to do because of our online presence. Building a strong online presence has become increasingly important and can have direct benefits for you, both personally and professionally.

The number one key aspect reason for this is meeting new, like-minded people. Let’s face it: opportunities come from people. Putting out your bat signal and creating meaningful connections with others can lead to opportunities for collaboration, support, and growth you could never imagine. Plus, you get to make cool, new friends.

But how exactly do you do this? Here are three tips to help you harness your online presence into meaningful connections with like-minded people:

Participate in (online) communities

Join relevant communities - both online and offline - and do your best to stay active and participate in discussions. This way it will not only be easier to meet new people who share your interests and goals, but you can also use this to broadcast your expertise into the community, which will often result in more members being aware of you and reaching out to you directly. After all, the goal is to attract people, not chase them :)

Engage with others

In the past, we’ve spoken about the value of engaging with people you’d like to meet, but we can emphasize enough how important this is to building a relationship with them. If you thoughtfully comment on people’s posts, like their updates, and share their content, you’re increasing the chance of them noticing you. Do this long enough and your heroes might be interested enough to reach out directly. It’s all about expanding your luck surface area.

Offer help and support

There’s no better way of connecting with someone than helping them out. We’re wired to immediately like people who help us and usually want to return the favor. The best part is that you don’t have to have a direct relationship with someone to help them out. For example, you can answer a question they’ve posted on their social timeline, offer advice, or simply show support for their work by being a strong cheerleader. Remember: you have unique knowledge and expertise that could easily help someone else, no matter how seemingly important they are. Do this enough times and they will likely take note.

Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun. Playing the Great Online Game is all about creating more luck and optionality for yourself, but don’t stress about it too much. After all, games are meant to be fun :)

With love,

Team Salley
